Alfalfa is higher in protein and calcium than most grass hays, which makes it useful for working horses, lactating mares, growing foals and horses that need to gain condition. Because it is rich, many owners feed it alongside grass hay or wheat straw rather than as the only forage. When checking quality, look for green, leafy hay with fine stems, a fresh sweet smell and no dust, mould, weeds or discoloured patches. Avoid bales that feel damp or warm inside. Introduce any new forage gradually over a week or so, and ask your vet or an equine nutritionist about the right amount for your horse.
In Pakistan's heat, keep alfalfa hay in a shaded, dry and well-ventilated store, off the ground on pallets, and protect it from monsoon rain so it does not go mouldy. Fresh green alfalfa should be wilted slightly and fed in sensible portions. Provide plenty of clean water at all times.
